All Things New

The first in a series of three painted in May of 2020, All Things New began like most paintings I create, with no initial plan because I always like to allow the painting to emerge on its own terms. Ultimately this painting brought a lot of joy to my creative process. There is a woman in the center of this work with her hand outstretched. Her hand resembles a flower and all the creation around her is a joyful world created as an outgrowth of her efforts and work.

The Shift

This was a challenging painting for one specific reason; it was a shift! In the process of painting this work, there were several times the painting was near completion. It was beautiful and yet for me it felt a bit too familiar. “I’ve done this painting so many times before,” I thought. I wanted something different - a change in psyche. As I moved through several iterations of the painting I kept blotting out beautiful scenes and creating new ones. After five scary pallet knife obliterations, I was ultimately satisfied with this final image. It speaks for itself, and in the end I realized I had never painted anything like it before. It was new, unfamiliar territory for the Bird who landed there.

Place of Love

This painting is about separating Love from Pain. It tells a story of pure love, a safe place with no hint of distress; a story of truth - separating out the lies. This beautiful place is for you to explore on your own, may it convey a story of hope and inspiration as you walk through.

A note for those who study my works: Many of my paintings share threads of creative imagery. For example, if you look at the right lower corner in Place of Love it is reminiscent of the beautiful space in Celebration, which I painted in 2016 (found in Portfolio: Life Forms 2). One may consider that both these paintings reflect a similar space.

This painting features a friend relaxing in a waterfall under the bridge. If you look you might see her in a swim cap. In my opinion, she is the main character of this painting and the space is literally all about her. She's enjoying peace in this oasis. There is a large protective dragon above the bridge, no doubt she feels safe! This painting got its name from an observer who saw the word "Oasis" written in red next to my friend. What a happy place. I love to imagine my friend, who has passed away, in this beautiful representation of an environment filled with joy, happiness and safety.

The Meaning of Lion

In recent years I have often felt connected and comforted by dreams and thoughts of lions, so I decided to paint the vision this past month. Since painting this intriguing animal nearly life-size on a 3 x 4 foot canvas, I now feel I have a Lion/Lioness of my very own!

I get many feelings and thoughts from this image, and I wonder what comes to you. Do you see the Lion within another Lion? Is he/she up in a tree? How does this Lion emerge or where does it come from? What is that object at the bottom of the canvas? What feelings come to you from viewing this painting?

It is my hope that this painting encourages the enjoyment of lions, and helps you contemplate what lions mean to you. Essence of Horse

I've had the desire to paint a horse for sometime now. I have painted horses in the past but I was ready for a "new breed." On a recent morning, I announced this to my husband, Carl, and I began pondering the fact that I would need to prepare a new canvas on which to paint my new breed horse.  As we walked to our offices, I noticed a canvas that I had already prepped, and it even had some background painting that I had begun. “I can paint a horse on that canvas,” I thought.

Carl glanced at the canvas and remarked, “Look there is a horse!” I immediately saw the form of a horse that Carl had noticed - all I had to do was bring him out!  Thus the title of this painting, “Essence of Horse.” This very sweet and extremely confident horse emerged through the process of creativity that was not entirely my own, but rather one of shared experience.

Hallelujah

I recently painted this portrait of my friend, Johanna, who passed away in July 2017.  The work is entitled “My Beautiful Friend JJQ.” You will notice a “Hallelujah” across her garment, which reflects her joy, and really my joy as well in saying the word.  We would say it to each other often, at random moments. What a soul she was.  The most beautiful of friends…quiet, loving, caring, limitless, accepting, real, non-competitive, honoring of others, unselfish.  

Those are just a few of her good qualities.  To help with the grief and sadness of losing her, I decided to paint her portrait this year in July 2018, on the anniversary of her passing.  For reference, I had a specific photo in mind taken in 2017.  This was from a lunch we had together at a Thai restaurant near the beach.  There were some stunning flowers set upon the table for us to enjoy.  We proceeded to tuck them behind our ears as we smiled at one another.  She looked so beautiful and happy that day as we celebrated time together.

Early on, as the portrait was taking form, I was excited to get that flower in!  I painted it almost immediately as it was a part of her joy.  When it came down to it though, I ultimately referenced another photograph, one that reflected a happy time/memory she shared with her son on his sixth birthday.   

Even though I set out with my own ideas, she seemed to influence me to play a bit when it came to creating her portrait.  Sometimes I have an idea about an artwork before I begin, but I am not overly committed to it,  I remain dedicated to the free form process.  Allowing the painting to emerge and become what it wants to be helps to capture an essence.  I am honored and grateful to have brought this portrait forth, reflecting Johanna’s joy in life and my good memories.
